Albertans for Food Safety is a group of concerned citizens that believes all people have a right to eat and grow clean and natural food, and that this right is currently being violated by the rapid and unchecked concentration of new technologies and ingredients used in our food supply.

AFS does not accept Health Canada's and CFIA’s claims that Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and Genetically Engineered (GE) ingredients are no different from their natural counterparts and therefore do not need to be tested for health and safety. We are disturbed that no long-term testing has ever been done on humans, and that animal studies which have shown alarming results, such as tumours and infertility, have been ignored by our government, mainstream media and scientists.

AFS’ mission is to call for accountability and transparency within the government for its decisions which impact human health and safety, and demand that thorough testing be conducted on all technologies, chemicals and ingredients before they enter our food and water supply. Alarmingly, these technologies and ingredients currently require neither testing nor labelling, and derivatives of these new food production methods are found in nearly all of the food we eat.

We insist that a moratorium be placed on new approvals, and that testing commence immediately on all previously approved technologies to ensure long-term health and safety. In the meantime, we insist that all GMO ingredients be labelled.

AFS believes that all people have a right to know what GMO ingredients are in their food, and should be informed that GMOs have been linked to serious health risks in both animals and humans. We support the peoples’ right to choose whether or not they wish to consume these foods, and their right to access affordable, clean organic options.

AFS is a grassroots, community organization that focuses on raising public awareness around issues related to food safety, such as:

  • Understanding and avoiding GMOs and chemicals in our food and water

  • Identifying and supporting organic and non-GMO food options,  especially local farmers and markets

  • Advocating sustainable farming methods for food production which work with nature to build and maintain healthy soil, water and air for the long-term well-being of the planet

  • Reconnecting Albertans with, and instilling respect for, nature and all things natural

  • Building a network of like-minded Albertans, retailers and organizations to promote the growing movement toward healthy sustainable living with respect for the planet
